Introduction

This section provides some work done in understanding user groups through developing personas, establishing research goals, etc for the given use case.

Use case

The use case defines an application for tracking the status of a tailor's order. The aim is to understand the users who will be using the app and understand their pain points.

Objective

The aim is to understand the basics of conducting research to empathize with users. This includes:

  • Research goals that will guide the questions for users and the designs for the app.
  • The target audience for the app.
  • Interview questions to lay the foundation for the app design and features.

Research Goals

  • Understand the different kinds of users who would be using the app.
  • Understand how different kinds of users would react to it.
  • Understand how users currently engage and solve the problem.
  • Understand to what extent and in what ways the app would simplify their task.
  • Understand the problems and pain points they face.
  • Understand if the app would really help and users will be happy about it.

Questions

Below is the set of questions that will help us understand our users and their goals and pain points.

  • Have you ever used an app to track the order from your tailor?
  • Do you think the app would be a good idea and why?
  • What kind of issues do you run into when you cannot get an update about your order?
  • As a tailor in what ways do you think your customers would be happy about this app?

User Description

How do our users look like?

Below are the descriptions of some potential users (fictional) and the answers to the interview questions targeted to them. The aim was to cover a diverse set of people for the research.

Neelam

  • Age: 53
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Education
  • Hometown: Champagne, Illinois
  • Family: Married with 3 children
  • Occupation: Teacher
user image

Neelam is an established education professional with 10 years of teaching experience. She is passionate about her job but sometimes has trouble managing the stress of teaching while also managing all the household chores. Neelam's house is quite far away from the market area. Due to her hectic schedule, she often gets frustrated with going to the market to get groceries, tailor's clothes and other stuff.

Neelam appreciates products that help her stay more organised and manage her time in the classroom and at home.

Questions

  1. Have you ever used an app to track the order from your tailor?
  2. Response: No, I have not.
  3. Do you think the app would be a good idea and why?
  4. Response: Yes, I personally feel that it would be a great idea because it would solve many problems for me and save time also. As I am good with mobile phones and technology, I think it would be similar to other apps that I use everyday.
  5. What kind of issues do you run into when you cannot get an update about your order?
  6. Response: There are many issues that I face:

Since the tailor's shop is far away, I need to plan ahead if I have to pick up any order. In case I do not have cash I have to come again and pay later.

For any updates, I have to call the tailor, but many times there is no response. In case of urgent requirements, I do not have many options.

  7. How comfortable are you with technology?
  8. Response: I am quite good with technology. As I mentioned before I use various social media platforms and e-commerce websites on an everyday basis. So, I guess it wouldn't be much of a work.

Leah

  • Age: 42
  • Education: Doctor of Medicine (MD)
  • Hometown: Newport, Rhode Island
  • Family: Single, lives alone
  • Occupation: Doctor
user image

Leah is a doctor with a busy and demanding schedule. She works unpredictable shifts in a mid-size hospital, and swims for a local semi-professional team. Leah has a visual impairment for which she uses screen reader technologies. This technology makes using apps and websites much more convenient for Leah, but not all apps and websites are optimized for screen reader usage. Leah cares a lot about being available to her patients and is often taking appointments at the last minute.

She would like to be able to spend as much of her non-work time as possible on her hobbies and personal life. Leah would like for there to be an easier and efficient way to order food, groceries, and personal care items to pick up on-the-go.

Questions

  1. Have you ever used an app to track the order from your tailor?
  2. Response: No, I have never used one, but I have used food delivery apps a couple of times.
  3. Do you think the app would be a good idea and why?
  4. Response: Yes, definitely. I have a very busy and demanding schedule and I have to extremely manage my time to do things like pick up items and order stuff. And I get many of my clothes tailored so having such an app would be extremely helpful as it would help me buy some time for myself.
  5. What kind of issues do you run into when you cannot get an update about your order?
  6. Response: First of all I get issues with various apps that do not have assistive technology for visually impaired people. That is the biggest hindrance that I frequently come across. Apart from this, I really would not get affected much if I do not get the update. Surely there is delay and so a tracking app for tailor order would be an add on.

  7. How comfortable are you with technology?
  8. Response: I am not an expert. I am quite slow but I do manage to get things done with help.

Joseph

  • Age: 20
  • Education: Enrolled in online college classes
  • Hometown: Nairobi, Kenya
  • Family: Lives with their mother, father and one younger sibling
  • Occupation: Full time student
user image

Joseph is a recent immigrant to the United States who is enrolled in online college classes and is also taking classes at a night school for learning English. He can read English well, but sometimes encounters difficulties at restaurants or while out running errands, where shopkeepers tend to speak very quickly and limited translation options are available. Joseph is passionate about sports and the outdoors, and wants to explore what his neighbourhood has to offer. Joseph's priority is balancing his studies with fun, while also having time to look after his younger sibling when his parents are at work.

Questions

  1. Have you ever used an app to track the order from your tailor?
  2. Response: I do not remember using one.
  3. Do you think the app would be a good idea and why?
  4. Response: For sure, it will help a lot. I live with my parents and they always look out for tailors. And if such an app is made it will make things easy for me because I have to run errands.
  5. What kind of issues do you run into when you cannot get an update about your order?
  6. Response: It is difficult many times. Many times there are no contact details so I have to physically get to the shop. It takes time and also I face language issues. So many times things are not clear.
  7. How comfortable are you with technology?
  8. Response: I am very good. I find technology extremely helpful even for daily chores.

  1. Have you ever used an app to track the order from your tailor?
  2. Response: No, I have never used one.
  3. Do you think the app would be a good idea and why?
  4. Response: Yes, it will be very useful for my customers as well as for me. If I get this app for my shop I think my sales will increase and more people will come for my service.
  5. What kind of issues do you run into when you cannot get an update about your order?
  6. Response: They get frustrated and start calling me. Many times I miss their call and that makes it worse.

  7. How comfortable are you with technology?

Personas

Personas are key to the design process because they reflect users' lifestyles and give an idea of how to meet users' needs or challenges. They are also context-specific and focused on the behaviors and goals of users interacting with the product effectively. Below are personas created for the use case.

User Stories

A user story is a fictional one-sentence story told from the persona's point of view to inspire and inform design decisions. It can also serve as a "checklist" to make sure the key problems the users might face when engaging with your product are addressed and solved. Below are user stories for the use case.

Journey Maps

A journey map is just what it sounds like, an illustration of what the user goes through to achieve their goals. It is the series of experiences a user has as they achieve a specific goal. They help to think and feel like the user. Below is a sample of the journey map for one of our personas.

Conclusion

How did it go?

The research goals, user personas, journey maps, and user stories helped me understand the people in a much better way. It helped me understand their expectations from the application and how they achieve their goals in day-to-day life. It also emphasizes the fact that the more diverse the user groups are, the better problem-solving abilities the product/application will have.
